Esther Font

During my internship at Reprodukt, I undertook a crucial task: crafting a handwritten font for the German edition of "Esther's Notebooks 7: Tales from my sixteen-year-old life." Originally slated for release in the first half of 2023, the publication faced delays until November 2023. My role was indispensable in meeting the deadline, saving both time and money in the later stages of production.

My process involved meticulous glyph selection from previous Handletterings by Hartmut Klotzbücher, which I seamlessly incorporated into a Calligraphr template. By incorporating up to four variations of each glyph, the texts appeared more organic overall. Next, I adjusted size, thickness, and alignment, enhancing the texts' authenticity to mimic handwriting. This effect was further intensified by incorporating ligatures and digitally recreating specific missing glyphs while upholding the established style.

Utilizing Calligraphr's web app, I fine-tuned the font by making size and kerning adjustments, aligning elements, and modifying individual glyphs' thickness using Photoshop. After careful letter and line spacing adjustments, the completed font was exported and handed over to the production team. With these efforts, "Esthers Tagebücher 7" has made its way to the shelves, beautifully embodying the essence of its handwritten charm.
